Jerod Wims is a former collegiate sprinter and track and field coach from Miami, Florida. He was a split end on the 2003 Miami Carol City Chiefs football team, which won the FHSAA Class 6A state championship. After high school he pursued a career in track and field, eventually earning NCAA All-American honors at Auburn University.
Early Life
Wims grew up in Miami and was an honor roll student at Miami Carol City Senior High School in his senior year.[1] He was recruited for track by programs including Auburn, Miami, Florida State, Alabama, and Florida A&M.[2]
Collegiate Career
Florida A&M
Wims attended Florida A&M University for the summer and fall of 2004 before transferring.[2]
Florida International University
At Florida International University, Wims became one of the top sprinters in the Sun Belt Conference. He anchored a 4x100-meter relay that broke the school record in seven consecutive races and qualified for the NCAA Championship as the third-ranked team in the east region.[2]
In the summer of 2005, Wims placed fifth in the 100-meter dash at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in a time of 10.71 seconds, earning USA Junior All-American honors and qualifying for the Pan American Games in Ontario, Canada. He also finished seventh in the 200 meters at the same meet.[3]
Auburn University
Wims transferred to Auburn University, where he competed as one of the top 100m and 200m sprinters in the program. He earned NCAA All-American status in 2009 and graduated that same year with a degree in Criminology.[3]
Professional Career
Following his graduation from Auburn, Wims competed professionally in track and field overseas.[3]
Coaching Career
Wims returned to the United States and transitioned into coaching. He served as head track and cross country coach at Windsor Academy High School and worked as a Fire Sergeant for the City of Perry, Georgia before entering college coaching.[3]
His collegiate coaching stops have included Mercer University, South Carolina State University, the University of Central Arkansas, and Boston College, where he has served as assistant coach for sprints, hurdles, and relays.[3]
