Early life

Jo Marie Payton was born August 3, 1950, in Albany, Georgia, to Driscoll Payton, a construction worker, and Frankie Bell Payton, who worked as a maid. She was the second of nine children.[1] The family moved to Opa-locka, Florida, when she was three months old, and most of her siblings were born there.[1]

[UNVERIFIED] Before Carol City, Payton attended North Dade Junior/Senior High School in Bunche Park.

Carol City

Payton graduated from Miami Carol City Senior High School in 1968.[1]

She was a Carol City student on April 4 of that year, the day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis. In a 2023 interview with WPLG Local 10, Payton recalled learning the news as a student and said she still remembered the pain of the day decades later.[1]

After Carol City

Payton left Miami for Albany State University in Albany, Georgia.[1] After college she moved to California and joined the national touring company of the Broadway musical Purlie, which starred Robert Guillaume.[2]

Payton, top row center in the black hat and pink top, with the cast of Family Matters.

Her break came in 1987, when she was cast as Harriette Winslow, an elevator operator, on the ABC sitcom Perfect Strangers.[2] Audiences responded to the character, and ABC spun Harriette off into her own series. Family Matters premiered in 1989 and ran for nine seasons.[2]

Payton played Harriette opposite Reginald VelJohnson as Chicago police officer Carl Winslow. She left the show partway through its final season and appeared for the last time on December 19, 1997.[2]

From 2001, Payton voiced Suga Mama Proud on Disney's The Proud Family, a role she reprised in the 2005 feature The Proud Family Movie and in the 2022 Disney+ revival The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.[2]

Her other television credits include Moesha, Will & Grace, The Parkers, Girlfriends, Desperate Housewives, Judging Amy, 7th Heaven, and The Jamie Foxx Show.[2] She has been nominated four times for the NAACP Image Award.[1]

Community and honors

Payton served as grand marshal of Miami's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Liberty City on January 16, 2023. It was her second time in the role, about 25 years after she first led the parade.[1]

[UNVERIFIED] Payton is credited with founding the Frankie Payton Scholarship Fund at Albany State University in honor of her mother.
