Jo Marie Payton was born August 3, 1950, in Albany, Georgia, to Driscoll Payton, a construction worker, and Frankie Bell Payton, who worked as a maid. Her break came in 1987, when she was cast as Harriette Winslow, an elevator operator, on the ABC sitcom ''Perfect Strangers''.<ref name="imdb" /> Audiences responded to the character, and ABC spun Harriette off into her own series. Payton played Harriette opposite Reginald VelJohnson as Chicago police officer Carl Winslow. She left the show partway through its final season and appeared for the last time on December 19, 1997.<ref name="imdb" />
